My Social Week: Comic Relief Hackathon and Friend Lists

Comic Relief Hackathon

The Facebook Garage hackathon for Comic Relief on Saturday took up much of my social week. We organised it as a “master chef” style head to head between three teams, all competing to create the best Facebook application in a day.

I did the Simon Cowell job of judging which is a lot harder than it looks. Our judging criteria were -

  • monetisation - did it meet Comic Relief’s business objectives to raise donations for Red Nose Day?
  • distribution - how likely to spread and be viral was it?
  • usability - did it look nice and was it simple enough to use?
  • innovation - was it a new idea?
  • funny - Comic Relief is all about doing something funny for money - was the app funny?

There were three entrants:

  • Chris Thorpe (with a little help from Amber) created a comic relief quiz which was clever technically as a Facebook Connect app that also ran on Myspace
  • Fabio de Bernardi and Carlos’s “I like u coz” which got friends to donate towards heart warming stories about each other
  • Mat Clayton, Sam Stokes, Dan Lester and Josh March’s put together a great looking Funny for Money app to rate each other jokes. Each time you give a friend a red nose as an award you give a donation to Comic Relief.

The Funny for Money app from Mat and team was judged the winner as it’s working Paypal integration, great look and feel and simple working concept made this the Comic Relief Hackathon winner for 2009.

It goes live on Wednesday - the event is supported by 5 million ad impressions from Adknowledge, sweatshirts from Facebook, the venue from Microsoft Biz Spark and hosting by EveryCity. Check out the Every City sponsored hackathon web site for more.

Friend Lists

Hardly seems time to include anything else in this week, however I must just tell you about Friend Lists on Facebook - they are the cure to the problem of ensuring your boss doesn’t see what you did last weekend.

Arrange your friends into friend lists for better privacy control

Arrange your friends into friend lists for better privacy control

Here’s how they work:

  • You segment your Facebook friends into different groups - I have quite a few but you only really need two or three, for instance I separate between “Clients, Old friends, Current friends, Church people, Work Colleagues and Family”.

  • You can use whatever categories you like as these lists aren’t shared with anyone  but you.
  • Then you set for each friend list what they can and can’t see. Clients only see Posted Notes and Items and my professional profile while Family and Friends can see all my photos, status and even photos my friends tag me in (though this can sometimes be embarassing)

  • You can even check it by using the profile privacy settings and use “See how a friend sees my profile” You can then check for individual friends that they are only seeing the aspects of you that you want them to see.

It’s a great way to manage your privacy while keeping all your social network contacts in one place.

Have a social week!

What kind of Twit are you?

Over a period of time I’ve identified the following distinct classifications of people using Twitter - which group are you in?

Celebrity Stalker
There’s a surprising amount of celebs and public figures ‘embracing the Tweet’. Updates range from bleary-eyed getting out of bed habits to well-constructed PR snippets, and can often be a voyeuristically personal view into their world.  Highlights include Jonathan Ross, Darth Vader and Stephen Fry. Should keep you busy until the next issue of Heat.

Microblogger
Everything is put down in a tweet, no matter how mundane or worthless. Potential offenders are usually hitting 30+ posts a day. Great stuff for the Celebrity Stalkers to lap up.

Industry Groupie
All your Twitter friends are in the same industry as you, Twitter is used solely as a networking and information gathering/sharing tool. People in this category tweet as a way of life, meeting new people in the same field, quickly gathering followers with similar work-interests as themselves. Often encroaching on the ‘Link Sharer’ type…

Link Sharer
Your tweets mostly consist of links, either from the web or others Twitter feeds. You have a mild to severe competitive streak and need to be the first in your network to present ‘the cool link’ before anyone else.

Pure Follower
Not really bothered about tweeting yourself, but more than happy to follow along with updates from others. Pure Followers are information sponges, often exceling at pub quizes. Not to be confused with the Celebrity Stalker.

Boredom Buster
Tweeting-time reserved for when you’re bored, and can’t think of anything else to play with on your phone. Example situations: waiting for the other half outsde a changing room, using public transport, waiting for a mate at a gig. Typical tweet frequency: one every couple of months.

Investigator
A popular category; basically you’re a two-post wonder. Those two posts went something like this: “YESSSS! I’m on Twitter!” followed very shortly by “I’m eating a sandwich”. And then nothing. Ever. Many start out this way, excited to see what the fuss is about, but then experience feelings of confusion about what to do next, leading to Twitter Abandonment. Twitter could do with  better handholding features for new starters - big fat links to useful search tools, perhaps some categorised examples of people you might find worthy of following based on your interests etc.

Which of the above am I? Probably a three way split between Link Sharer, Industry Groupie, and Celebrity Stalker.

Funny money and laughing cats

Coming to you once again with all the latest happenings for a Londoner on the Social Web.

Red Nose Day 2009

Harry Hill introduces Red Nose Day on Facebook

Harry Hill introduces Red Nose Day on Facebook

I’ve been checking out the Red Nose Day fan page this week which is full of fun. It even has Harry Hill as the dedicated Facebook host which is pretty cool. Comic Relief are using social networks to make Red Nose Day last for 44 days rather than just one, to hopefully raise more money this year than in 2007.

LOL Cats

Another lolcat

Not strictly social but becoming a web phenomenon all the same: the lolcats site displays funny pictures of kittens and cats in an ever updating stream. I even showed off a few of the snaps in a recent business presentation on 5 things you wish you knew about Facebook Connect. Now, where is LMAO Cats that’s what I want to know…

Facebook Fan Page Competition

Friends enjoy a picnic in Battersea Park

As a work challenge we’ve each got to create a Facebook fan page and see who can get the most fans by March 1st. I think I’m winning as my Hyde Park and Regents Park fan pages are currently beating colleague Steve’s Pipe Cleaners one.  If you’re on Facebook, be a dear and fan my personal favourite London park in Battersea, you might even help me win that bottle of Nudge Champagne. o )

My Social Week: Jetman, Guess the Sketch and Snow on snow

The My Social Week Blog post series is all about what’s been happening over the past week on the social networks.

Flying around

Great, now I'm a flying banana, wonderful, really.

Great, now I'm a flying banana, wonderful, really.

I gave a talk at Eton college on Friday and asked what they used Facebook for. Events and Photos were the obvious one and the surprise was Jetman. So I tried it and sure enough this addictive little game lets you challenge your mates to see who can get furthest. By being only one go at a time and easy to lose, it works really well.

It’s a bird, no it’s a plane, no it’s…

What on earth is she drawing...

Pictionary! finally comes to Facebook as Guess the Sketch and actually works - really fun playing with the odd random punter and I’m looking forward to my friends joining in. Look out for the game’s very sophisticated way of banning / censuring users who try to cheat by writing out the letters and asking other game players to adjudicate.

Snow on Snow

And for us UK citizens this was the week when Snow photos on Facebook hogged my news feed. Thanks to friends and family for all that whiteness.

Lots of snow...

Lots of snow…

Have a good social week

My Social Week: 25 random facts, b-box and go find

My Social Week is a new series  where I highlight the big news about user activity over the past week on Facebook, Bebo and Myspace. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

25 random facts about me

Last week on Facebook you may have found yourself tagged in a note only to discover you weren’t there. The chain email viral has found a new potent form - the Facebook notes tool.

25 random facts is sweeping the networks as we all tell more about ourselves to the friends - here’s a few web facing example: dilettante, baltimore sun,  and poire-gourmande.

If you find yourself tagged then try it - it’s fun and you learn lots about people. I even discovered a shared passion for old BBC B computer games through it…

B-Box

B-box is a new type of TV channel just for Bebo-ers. Hosted by James and Alice this is the familiar magazine style format updated for the interactive online world of Bebo. The Bebo id of each person interviewed pops up in the vid so the famous are now only one click away. Cool stuff, just don’t rush out and make those Creme Egg pancakes from episode 2 just yet…

Go Find

Another Bebo hit from last week - this little game for Adidas has captured the Bebo-ers imagination. Each day a new clue comes out to find a box hidden somewhere on Bebo. Try accessing the page at the time the clue is due and you’ll never get through. So simple yet so effective…
